Casa Rosada Sayulita
Chicago-based interior designer Summer Thornton has brought a vibrant vision to life with Casa Rosada, a luxury vacation home in Sayulita, Mexico. Collaborating with local architect Enrique García, Thornton transformed a late 20th-century house into a pink-hued paradise that blends modern design with traditional Mexican elements. The project began by salvaging only a pair of wooden arched doors from the original structure, now serving as a grand entrance to the reimagined property.
At the heart of Casa Rosada lies a welcoming courtyard, featuring colorful Moroccan tiles and chukum-plastered walls. Thornton’s choice of a warm, melon-pink hue creates an atmosphere that’s both playful by day and moody by night. The interior spaces reflect her vision of “Luis Barragán at the beach,” with a sunken living room offering ocean views and custom furniture. Each bedroom is a unique sanctuary, while outdoor areas are adorned with elegant Santa Barbara umbrellas, perfect for lounging in the tropical climate.
Summer Thornton shares with Veranda Magazine, “As a designer, my dream has always been to build a vacation house in Mexico—a tropical oasis that combines the comfort, privacy and beauty of a thoughtfully designed home with the staff and services of a luxury hotel. For me, that’s the perfect way to vacation.”
“One of my favorite details was the very last thing I chose. For the outdoor umbrellas, I decided to go with Santa Barbara Designs, which are, in my opinion, the best umbrellas on the market, especially if you want a more traditional look. They’re truly wonderful: well-made, durable, beautiful. They offer fully customized options, but we were down to the wire, and luckily, they had the perfect dusty green. I love how it complements the palm trees; green and pink is a great natural combination.”
